The office for the AHLA is crazy busy so they haven’t exactly had time to sit down with us to go over a specific work plan. We have had a lot of free time browsing the internet which isn’t what I signed up for so I am a bit confused. We did receive a couple of tasks- for example, the AHLA 3rd annual conference is coming up and we were to email to those part of the newsletter or even individuals that they had collect business cards for in the past to invite them to attend. Additionally, we were discussing the AHLA Literacy Video Contest as well thus leading towards homework by Prof Peter to find Western Health Literacy Videos. I know- its sounds majorly confusing. I’m talking about videos such as the popular “Do Not Smoke” made in Thailand (see below)
A Canadian version I would say be “Dear 16 year old me” where the message resonated strongly with youth about protecting your skin.
We were researching these type of videos because we actually have to come up with the grading criteria for this worldwide competition which is pretty cool. Unfortunately communication with the head lady in charge has been a bit slow so we aren’t too sure whether the videos we found were actually going to be beneficial and whether we were on the right track. I guess, the most important thing is to continue to stay flexible during this internship. Just help where we can!
Side note: The hospital is considered rather small for the region we are in and the staff is very close. The entire staff team knows who we are and they have lots of fun popping by on our floor. For some reason – and it may be the language barrier but we are their taste testers. They have these sales people that come by every day to sell a/c, a fan or in this case – milk. For the last couple of days, we have been tasting different types of milk and informing them how we like it. I don’t get it – but hey- free food! Also- something really funny – our supervisor Prof Peter really enjoys giving us a banana every day. Every time its lunch he walks by and hands us a banana. We were so confused but he told us that he grew up with a banana farm and how nutritious it is. Potassium K! Woohoo!!!
